Dwight Evans

Dwight Evans Marquee

b. November 3, 1951 · Boston Red Sox 1972–1990, Baltimore Orioles 1991

He played twenty seasons, nineteen of them for Boston, and finished with 2,446 hits, 385 home runs, 1,384 runs batted in, 1,470 runs and 1,391 walks. He led the American League in walks three times, in home runs in the strike-shortened 1981, and in runs in 1984.

Eight Gold Gloves came from right field at Fenway Park, which is the hardest one in the game to play — shallow, angled, and with the sun behind the pitcher in the afternoon. His catch in the eleventh inning of the sixth game of the 1975 World Series is the one people describe first.

He was better in his thirties than his twenties, which the voting did not reward: the writers gave him 28, 49 and 18 votes across three ballots and dropped him after 1999. A Veterans Committee gave him eight of sixteen in 2020, the closest he has come.
