Schwall arrived in Boston's rotation in 1961 and went 15-7 with a 3.22 earned run average in 178 innings. He completed 10 of his 25 starts, threw two shutouts and struck out 91. The season brought him the American League Rookie of the Year award, an All-Star selection and fourteenth place in Most Valuable Player voting.

His second season was harder: a 9-15 record and 4.94 earned run average across 182 innings. Boston then traded him to Pittsburgh, where he went 6-12 with a 3.33 average in 1963 before gradually shifting from the rotation toward relief work.

Seven seasons gave him a 49-48 record, a 3.72 earned run average, 408 strikeouts and four saves in 743 innings. He made 103 starts among 172 appearances, completing 18 games and throwing five shutouts. Schwall closed his career with Atlanta in 1966 and 1967, six years after his decorated debut.
