b. July 17, 1942 · Chicago Cubs 1964–1975, St. Louis Cardinals 1976–1977, Chicago White Sox 1977–1979

He played 1,955 games at shortstop, won two Gold Gloves and was chosen for six All-Star teams, and had 181 hits in 1969 for the Chicago club that led the division into September and did not win it. Sixteen seasons gave him 1,931 hits, 684 walks and a .252 average.

In 1979 the White Sox made him player-manager, the first since 1962. He went 46-60 and resigned in August, and nobody else did the job until Pete Rose in 1984.

He was a basketball and baseball star at Mississippi and coached both there afterward. He hit 14 home runs in sixteen years. The 1985 ballot gave him two votes of 395.
