He played twenty seasons and never wore another uniform. He batted .310 with 3,465 hits, 544 doubles, 260 home runs, 1,311 runs batted in, 1,923 runs and 358 stolen bases, in 2,747 games, 2,674 of them at shortstop. That hit total is sixth all-time and the most by any shortstop.

Rookie of the Year in 1996, he led the American League in runs in 1998 and in hits in 1999 and 2012, reached 200 hits in eight separate seasons, and won five Gold Gloves and five Silver Slugger awards. In 2000 he was named Most Valuable Player of both the All-Star Game and the World Series, which no other player has done.

The Yankees made him captain and left him at shortstop into his fortieth year. How well he played the position was argued about for two decades and is still not settled. In 2020 the writers gave him 396 votes of 397, one short of unanimous, and the identity of the holdout has never been established.
