Derek Jeter's 3,000th Hit

Derek Jeter went five-for-five against Tampa Bay on July 9, 2011, and his second hit of the afternoon, a home run into the left-field seats, was his 3,000th. New York won 5–4 and he drove in two runs.

No Yankee had done it before — not Ruth, not Gehrig, not DiMaggio or Mantle, none of whom got there in pinstripes. Jeter was thirty-seven, in his seventeenth season, and had been the club's starting shortstop since 1996, when he won Rookie of the Year and the first of five championships.

He played three more years and retired in 2014 with 3,465 hits, sixth on the all-time list at the time. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2020, one vote short of unanimous.
