He caught 147 games in 1952, his busiest season, and hit 11 home runs with 65 runs batted in, and he made the All-Star team the year after. He was St. Louis's principal catcher through most of the 1950s, on clubs that were competitive but never quite good enough.

Seventeen seasons gave him 908 hits, 177 doubles, 79 home runs, 441 runs batted in and a .237 average across 1,249 games behind the plate. He was traded to Milwaukee in 1955 and caught for the Braves clubs that reached two straight World Series, winning in 1957.

He was the first catcher in the history of the expansion Los Angeles Angels, at thirty-eight, in their inaugural 1961 season. He managed in the minor leagues for years after. The 1966 ballot gave him two votes of 302. He died in 1983, at sixty.
