Crush Holloway Marquee

b. September 15, 1896 · Indianapolis ABCs 1921–1923, Baltimore Black Sox 1924–1928, 1931–1932, Hilldale Club 1929, 1932, Detroit Stars 1930, New York Black Yankees 1932, 1935, Baltimore Sox 1933, Philadelphia Bacharach Giants 1934, Brooklyn Eagles 1935, Baltimore Elite Giants 1939

Crush Holloway was named after a staged train collision his father had watched in Texas, and he played as though the name were an instruction. Contemporaries wrote about his spikes; infielders learned to expect him to arrive high.

The Baltimore Black Sox had him for eight seasons across two spells, including the 1929 club that won the American Negro League. Before that were three years with the Indianapolis ABCs, and after it came the Hilldale Club, the Detroit Stars, the Bacharach Giants, the Brooklyn Eagles and the New York Black Yankees.

Born in Hillsboro, Texas in 1896, Holloway batted .273 with 937 hits, 573 runs and 148 stolen bases in the surviving record, and was seventy-five at his death in June 1972.
