He caught for Chicago from 1940 to 1943, missed 1944 and 1945 in military service, returned to the Cubs from 1946 to 1948, was traded to Pittsburgh for four seasons, and then came back to Chicago a second time in 1953 for four more — three separate stints with the same club bracketing one with another.
Fifteen seasons gave him 785 hits, 121 doubles, 308 runs batted in and a .252 average across 989 games behind the plate, with two All-Star selections, in 1948 and 1953, both as a Cub. He was known for a strong throwing arm and steady handling of pitching staffs rather than his bat.
He finished with the Cubs in 1956 at thirty-nine. He scouted for the Cubs afterward. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1982, at sixty-five.
