He started 32 games for Cleveland in 1932 and won 15. Four years later the White Sox put him in the bullpen and left him there: 53 appearances and 18 saves in 1937, then 61 appearances and 18 more in 1939, both league highs. The save would not be an official statistic for another three decades; the pattern of work it describes is what he was doing.
Fifteen seasons gave him 89 wins against 93, a 4.26 earned run average, 1,485 innings, 64 saves and 434 appearances. Cleveland had him for eight years as a starter and a swingman before Chicago found the use for him.
He went back to Cleveland in 1941 and pitched two more years. He died on the last day of 1955, at fifty-two. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
