Born July 21, 1980
Vallejo, CA, USA
Cleveland had him in a major league rotation at twenty, and he won seventeen games as a rookie. He finished with 251 wins and 3,093 strikeouts over nineteen seasons, the third left-hander to reach 3,000, after Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson. He won the American League Cy Young Award for Cleveland in 2007.
Cleveland traded him to Milwaukee in July 2008. He went 11-2 with a 1.65 earned run average in seventeen starts and pitched the Brewers into the postseason for the first time since 1982. He signed with New York that winter, led the league in wins in each of his first two years there, and won the 2009 World Series.
He stood six feet six and carried close to 300 pounds, and his last several seasons were pitched on a knee that would not hold, in a brace. In October 2015 he checked himself into an alcohol treatment center on the eve of the postseason and said so publicly. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2025.
