Carney Lansford Marquee

b. February 7, 1957 · California Angels 1978–1980, Boston Red Sox 1981–1982, Oakland Athletics 1983–1992

He hit .336 for Boston in the strike-shortened 1981 season, the best average in the American League, and the Red Sox traded him to Oakland that December for Tony Armas because they had Wade Boggs at third base. It worked out for everyone, which trades rarely do.

Fifteen seasons gave him 2,074 hits, 151 home runs, 874 runs batted in, 224 stolen bases and a .290 average. He hit .336 again in 1989, at thirty-two, and stole 37 bases that year for the Oakland club that won the World Series.

He played third base with limited range and reliable hands and was the senior man in a clubhouse of Canseco, McGwire and Henderson. A snowmobile accident in 1991 wrecked his knee and he retired the following year. The 1998 ballot gave him three votes of 473.
