Houston took him first overall in 2012 and he was Rookie of the Year in 2015 with 22 home runs in 99 games. He was the shortstop for the 2017 club that won the World Series and was afterward found to have stolen signs electronically all season; he defended his teammates publicly for years and apologized for the scheme itself.

In December 2022 he agreed to thirteen years and $350 million with San Francisco and then to twelve years and $315 million with the Mets, and both clubs backed out after their doctors read the surgical repair in his right ankle. Minnesota, which had him in 2022, signed him for six years instead.

Eleven seasons have given him 1,298 hits, 200 home runs, 724 runs batted in and a .275 average, with three All-Star selections and a Gold Glove and Platinum Glove in 2021. He is Puerto Rican and is still playing.
