Bucky Harris

Bucky Harris Marquee Hall of Fame 1975

b. November 8, 1896 · Washington Senators 1919–1928, Detroit Tigers 1929, 1931

He played 1,252 games at second base and five anywhere else, all but eleven of them for Washington. He batted .274 on 1,297 hits with 224 doubles, 722 runs and 506 RBI, and he stayed in the lineup: 154 games in 1921 and 154 again in 1922, with more than 140 in four other seasons.

Washington made him its player-manager while he was still the everyday second baseman. The club finished first in the American League in 1924 and won the World Series, then finished first again in 1925 and lost it. He played 143 games in the first of those seasons and 144 in the second, which is the part this archive can show.

His playing ended quietly, in someone else's uniform. Detroit hired him to manage and he put himself into seven games in 1929 and four in 1931, the last of them at 34. He managed for decades after that, in Washington and elsewhere, and won another World Series with the Yankees. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1975. He died on his 81st birthday.
