Fifteen seasons gave him 1,590 hits, 282 home runs, 1,018 runs batted in and a .262 average, with seven All-Star selections and six Silver Sluggers, all of them earned behind the plate. He was the most valuable player of the 2010 All-Star Game, which the National League won on his three-run double.

Nine of the fifteen seasons were in Atlanta, where he hit 188 home runs, second among the club's catchers to Javy López. New York had three years of him and Houston two, and the second of those ended with the 2017 World Series, the only title he won.

He is as well known for enforcing the unwritten rules as for any of it — the arguments at home plate in 2013 with Carlos Gómez and José Fernández, both about how a home run had been celebrated, were replayed for years and divided people about equally. His first ballot, in 2025, gave him seven votes of 394.
