Boog Powell

Boog Powell Marquee

b. August 17, 1941 · Baltimore Orioles 1961–1974, Cleveland Indians 1975–1976, Los Angeles Dodgers 1977

He was the Most Valuable Player of 1970, hitting 35 home runs, driving in 114 and drawing 104 walks for a Baltimore club that won 108 games and the World Series. The year before had been better in most respects — 37 home runs, 121 runs batted in, a .304 average — and Baltimore lost that World Series to the Mets.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,776 hits, 339 home runs, 1,187 runs batted in, 1,001 walks and a .266 average. He hit 303 of the home runs for Baltimore, behind only Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray in the franchise's records, and was picked for four All-Star teams.

Cleveland got him at thirty-three and he hit .297 with 27 home runs there in 1975, under Frank Robinson, his old teammate, in the first season any Black man had managed in the major leagues. He appeared in a long run of beer commercials in the 1980s that made him better known to people who had never watched him play, and he has run a barbecue stand at Camden Yards since it opened. He got five votes of 374 in 1983.
