Bobby Crosby took over at shortstop for Oakland in 2004 after Miguel Tejada left, hit 22 home runs and won American League Rookie of the Year. He never played a full season again.
Oakland had taken him in the first round out of Long Beach State in 2001, and he was the organization's answer to losing Tejada to free agency. A broken rib, a fractured ankle and persistent back trouble then took large parts of the next several years, and by 2009 he had lost the job to Orlando Cabrera. He finished with a season split between Arizona and Pittsburgh.
Born in Lakewood, California in 1980, Crosby batted .236 with 62 home runs across 747 games. His father Ed had also played in the majors, as an infielder in the 1970s.
