Bob Shawkey Marquee

b. December 4, 1890 · Philadelphia Athletics 1913–1915, New York Yankees 1915–1927

On April 18, 1923 he started the first game played at Yankee Stadium and won it, with Babe Ruth hitting the first home run in the building. He won 20 or more games four times for New York — 24 in 1916, then 20 in 1919, 1920 and 1922 — and pitched in five World Series for the club.

Fifteen seasons gave him 196 wins against 150 with a 3.09 earned run average, 2,937 innings, 197 complete games and 33 shutouts. Connie Mack sold him to the Yankees in 1915 for eighteen thousand dollars, which was among the first pieces of the roster that became the 1920s Yankees.

He managed the club in 1930, the season after Miller Huggins died, won 86 games, finished third and was replaced by Joe McCarthy. He served in the Navy in the First World War, coached at Dartmouth for years, and died on the last day of 1980, at ninety.
