Bob Boone Marquee

b. November 19, 1947 · Philadelphia Phillies 1972–1981, California Angels 1982–1988, Kansas City Royals 1989–1990

He caught 2,225 games, more than anyone had when he stopped in 1990, and now stands third behind Iván Rodríguez and Carlton Fisk. He won seven Gold Gloves, four of them after he turned thirty-five, and was still catching 130 games a season at forty.

His father Ray Boone was an All-Star infielder in the 1950s and his sons Bret Boone and Aaron Boone were both All-Stars, which no other family has managed across three generations. Bret hit 252 home runs; Aaron hit the pennant-winning home run for the Yankees in 2003 and has managed them since.

Nineteen seasons gave him 1,838 hits, 105 home runs, 826 runs batted in and a .254 average, with four All-Star selections. He caught the Philadelphia club that won the 1980 World Series. Five writers' ballots got him to 36 votes of 470 and no further.
