Ben Oglivie Marquee

b. February 11, 1949 · Boston Red Sox 1971–1973, Detroit Tigers 1974–1977, Milwaukee Brewers 1978–1986

He hit 41 home runs in 1980 to tie Reggie Jackson for the American League lead, with 118 runs batted in, and won a Silver Slugger. Sixteen seasons gave him 1,615 hits, 235 home runs, 901 runs batted in and a .273 average, with three All-Star selections.

He was Panamanian, quiet, and read philosophy and literature in clubhouses that found it remarkable enough to write about — the sportswriting of the period returns to it constantly, which says as much about the period as about him.

Nine of the sixteen seasons were in Milwaukee, and he was in left field for the 1982 club that reached the only World Series the franchise has played. He hit 34 home runs that year. He played four seasons in Japan afterward and coached in the minor leagues for years. The 1992 ballot gave him no votes.
