Ángel Berroa won American League Rookie of the Year in 2003 in one of the closest votes the award has produced, edging Hideki Matsui, and hit 17 home runs with 21 stolen bases for a Kansas City club that briefly contended that summer.
He had arrived from Oakland in a three-way trade at nineteen and held the shortstop job for five seasons, though the defense was erratic — he led American League shortstops in errors twice — and the bat declined steadily after the rookie year.
Born in Santo Domingo in 1978, Berroa batted .258 across 746 games and finished with brief spells for the Dodgers, the Mets and the Yankees in 2008 and 2009.
