He won the Gold Glove in center field every year from 1998 through 2007, ten in a row. Among outfielders only Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente have had longer runs, twelve each. He played 2,043 games in the outfield, and the defense is what people who watched him bring up first.

In 2005 he hit 51 home runs and drove in 128 runs, both the most in the National League that season, and the 51 stood as the most any Atlanta player had hit until Matt Olson hit 54 in 2023. He hit three home runs in a game twice, in September 2002 and July 2009. He was chosen for five All-Star teams.

Atlanta signed him out of Willemstad, Curaçao, and he debuted on August 15, 1996, four months past his nineteenth birthday. He finished with 1,933 hits, 434 home runs, 1,289 runs batted in and 1,204 runs over seventeen seasons, the last five split between four clubs. The writers elected him in 2026, on his ninth time on the ballot.
