Alfredo Griffin shared the 1979 American League Rookie of the Year award with Minnesota's John Castino, having taken over at shortstop for a Toronto team then in its third year of existence. He would play in the majors for eighteen seasons.
A switch-hitter from Santo Domingo, he arrived with Cleveland in 1976, spent six years in Toronto, then moved to Oakland where he won a Gold Glove in 1985 and played every game of three consecutive seasons. Four years with the Los Angeles Dodgers followed, including the 1988 championship, before he returned to Toronto for a title there in 1992.
Griffin finished with 1,688 hits and 192 stolen bases across 1,962 games, and was an All-Star in 1984.
