He went 19-11 for Texas in 1998, 18-9 in 1999 and 17-10 for Seattle in 2000, and was chosen for All-Star teams in the last two. Boston had traded him to Texas after 1997 for Jim Leyritz and Damon Buford, and Baltimore agreed to sign him in 1999 and then withdrew over a shoulder examination, which sent him to Seattle instead.
Fifteen seasons gave him 148 wins against 112, a 4.61 earned run average, 2,153 innings and 1,407 strikeouts. The earned run average is what the era's offenses did to a pitcher with an excellent curveball and an ordinary fastball.
He pitched for the Seattle club that won 116 games in 2001 and lost the Championship Series, and finished with the Dodgers and the Mets. The 2013 ballot gave him one vote of 569.
