Ty Cobb's 3,000th Hit

Ty Cobb collected three hits in five at-bats against the Boston Red Sox on August 19, 1921, the third of them carrying him past 3,000 for his career. Detroit won the game 10–0, with Cobb driving in a run and scoring another.

He was thirty-four and in his first season doubling as the Tigers' manager, a job he would hold for six years while continuing to play. The milestone barely registered as the notable thing about him: he had already won eleven batting titles and would finish with a .366 career average that has never been surpassed.

Cobb played until 1928, the last two seasons with Philadelphia, and retired with 4,189 hits, 2,247 runs and 896 stolen bases. He drew the highest vote total of the five men in the Hall of Fame's first class in 1936.
