Tris Speaker's 3,000th Hit

Cleveland was on its way to beating Washington 9–6 on May 18, 1925 when Tris Speaker singled, drove in a run and scored one himself. The single, his only hit in three trips, was the 3,000th of his career.

Speaker was thirty-seven and player-manager of the Indians, having taken the job in 1919 and won a World Series with them the following year. He was a center fielder famous for playing so shallow that he occasionally took throws at second base, and a hitter who finished with a .345 average across twenty-two seasons.

What outlasted everything else was his doubles. Speaker hit 792 of them, a record that still stands, and Pete Rose's 746 is the closest anyone has come. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1937.
