Pete Rose's 3,000th Hit

Pete Rose led off for Cincinnati on May 5, 1978 and singled twice in four at-bats. The second single was his 3,000th hit. Montreal won the game 4–3.

Rose was thirty-seven and appeared to be closing in on a career total, but he was not close to finished. Later that summer he hit in forty-four consecutive games, tying the National League record. He moved to Philadelphia the next year, spent 1984 in Montreal, and returned to Cincinnati as player-manager for his last three seasons.

He kept going until 1986 and stopped at 4,256 hits, more than anyone who has played the game, having passed Ty Cobb in 1985. In 1989 he accepted a permanent ban from baseball for betting on games, and he has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
