Eddie Murray's 3,000th Hit

Eddie Murray singled in three at-bats at Minnesota on June 30, 1995, and that one hit was his 3,000th. Cleveland won the game 4–1.

Murray was thirty-nine and eighteen years past a Rookie of the Year award with Baltimore, where he had spent most of his career before stops in Los Angeles and New York. He was a switch-hitter of relentless consistency rather than spectacular peaks: only once did he lead his league in home runs or runs driven in, yet the totals kept accumulating.

The following season he hit his 500th home run, and he retired in 1997 with 3,255 hits and 504 of them — a combination only Hank Aaron and Willie Mays had managed before him. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003.
