Carl Yastrzemski's 3,000th Hit

Boston was beating the New York Yankees 9–2 at Fenway Park on September 12, 1979 when Carl Yastrzemski singled for the 3,000th hit of his career. It was his only hit in four at-bats, and he scored a run.

Yastrzemski was forty and in his nineteenth season, all of them with the Red Sox, having replaced Ted Williams in left field in 1961. He had won the Triple Crown and the Most Valuable Player award in 1967, carrying Boston to a pennant, and had passed 400 home runs earlier that same summer — making him the first American League player to hold both totals.

He played four more years and retired in 1983 with 3,419 hits, 452 home runs and 1,845 walks. Cooperstown elected him in 1989.
