Cal Ripken Breaks the Iron Man Streak

On September 6, 1995, Cal Ripken Jr. started at shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles against the California Angels, playing in his 2,131st consecutive game and breaking Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played, a mark that had stood since Gehrig's own streak ended in 1939. Baltimore won 4–2.

When the game became official after the fifth inning, play stopped for a 22-minute celebration; Ripken took a lap around Camden Yards, shaking hands with fans along the way. President Bill Clinton was in attendance.

Ripken extended the streak to 2,632 games before voluntarily ending it on September 20, 1998. He played his entire 21-year career with the Orioles, was a 19-time All-Star, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.
