Barry Bonds Passes Hank Aaron

On August 7, 2007, San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds hit his 756th career home run off Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik at AT&T Park, passing Hank Aaron's total of 755 to become baseball's all-time home run leader. Aaron, who had held the record for 33 years, sent a recorded video tribute that played on the stadium scoreboard.

Bonds's pursuit of the record was shadowed by the sport's steroid era; he had been implicated in the BALCO doping investigation years earlier, and many fans and commentators questioned whether the record should carry an asterisk. Commissioner Bud Selig, who attended the game, notably did not applaud when the home run was hit.

Bonds finished his career in 2007 with 762 home runs, a total that still stands as the Major League record. He was also a seven-time National League MVP, more than any other player in history, and holds the single-season home run record of 73, set in 2001.
