Louisville Eclipse
The Eclipse were one of the six clubs that founded the American Association in 1882, the league formed to sell beer and play on Sundays after the National League forbade both. Three seasons at 162-123, finishing third, fifth and third.
The 1884 side won 68 and lost 40. Pete Browning played here throughout and was among the best hitters in the league; the bat he had made for him in a Louisville woodworking shop is the origin of the Louisville Slugger, which is the most durable thing the club produced.
Nobody who played here reached the Hall of Fame. Eclipse Park was the ground. The club took the Colonels name in 1885 and lasted until the National League contracted in 1899, when its owner bought into Pittsburgh and took Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke with him.
