Atlantic City Bacharach Giants

This is the earlier of the two Bacharach Giants clubs the archive holds. It was formed when two Atlantic City politicians brought a Black club north from Jacksonville in 1916 and renamed it after the city's mayor. Four recorded seasons at 88-72, before any eastern league existed to keep standings.

Three Hall of Famers played here: John Henry Lloyd, who managed in 1919; Judy Johnson, who began his career with the club at nineteen; and Ben Taylor. Dick Redding, a pitcher good enough that his nickname was Cannonball, managed the last two seasons.

The figures rest on the surviving box scores and cover a small share of what was played, this being independent baseball. The club reorganized into the Eastern Colored League in 1923, and the archive holds that version separately.
