He appeared in 1,035 games and started none of them. Over eighteen seasons he saved 601, struck out 1,133 hitters in 1,089 innings, and carried a 2.87 earned run average. Sixteen of those seasons were San Diego's; he arrived there during his rookie year of 1993 and stayed through 2008.
He was the first pitcher to reach 500 saves, in 2007, and the first to 600, in 2010, his last season. Mariano Rivera passed him on September 19, 2011, and finished with 652. Hoffman's 601 still stands second, and nobody else has reached 500. He led the National League in saves twice and saved 40 or more nine times.
He is remembered for one pitch, a changeup thrown at a fastball's arm speed. San Diego won the pennant in 1998, the year he saved 53 and led the league. He was a seven-time All-Star. The writers gave him 296 votes in 2016 and 337 of 422 in 2018, on his third try, which was enough.
