Travis Jackson Marquee Hall of Fame 1982

b. November 2, 1903 · New York Giants 1922–1936

He took over shortstop for the Giants when Dave Bancroft left for Boston after the 1923 season. He appeared in 1,323 games at the position and 309 more at third base, batting .291 with 1,768 hits, 135 home runs and 929 runs batted in. Only Brandon Crawford has played more games at shortstop for the franchise.

His knees were the trouble. They held him to 52 games in 1932 and 53 in 1933, when he was twenty-nine and looked finished, and then he came back in 1934 for 137 games and 101 runs batted in. In 1929 he had hit 21 home runs and scored 92, unusual production from a shortstop of that era.

The Giants won five pennants while he was there and the World Series in 1922 and 1933. The writers never gave him more than 14 votes on a ballot, and the Veterans Committee elected him in 1982, forty-six years after his last game. He gave one club every inning of his career and never drew a serious look from the writers.
