He won 222 games and lost 133, a winning percentage of .625 that is higher than most pitchers with 200 wins have, across seventeen seasons and 3,126 innings with a 3.49 earned run average. He led the American League in wins in 2000 with 20 and in shutouts twice.
He was the first of Oakland's three young starters at the end of the 1990s, with Mark Mulder and Barry Zito, and the club won 91 or more games in four straight seasons on the strength of them. Atlanta had nine of his seasons after that.
An ankle broken in a collision at first base in 2013 was thought to have ended him at thirty-eight. He signed with San Francisco, won 9 games in 2014 and started a World Series game the club won. The writers had him on two ballots and he came off after 2022 with twelve votes.
