St. Louis let him go after 1990, when he hit .230 in 121 games. Atlanta signed him for four years, and in 1991 he hit .319 with 187 hits — both the best in the National League — and won the Most Valuable Player award with twelve first-place votes, and the Braves went from last place to the World Series.
He led the league in hits again in 1992 with 199 and finished second in the voting that year. Fifteen seasons gave him 1,897 hits, 356 doubles, 140 home runs, 946 runs batted in and a .270 average, with three Gold Gloves at third base.
He was the senior figure on the Atlanta clubs that started winning and has coached hitters there for most of the years since. The 2004 ballot gave him one vote of 506.
