Ted Lyons Marquee Hall of Fame 1955

b. December 28, 1900 · Chicago White Sox 1923–1942, 1946

Chicago signed him off the Baylor campus in 1923 and he never pitched a game in the minor leagues. He won 260 games and lost 230, worked 4,161 innings and completed 356 starts, all of it for the White Sox. He led the American League in wins with 21 in 1925 and 22 in 1927, and in shutouts twice.

His team never finished above third place while he was on it. He arrived just after the Black Sox bans emptied the roster, and he never pitched for anyone else. A sore arm in 1931 cost him his fastball, so he learned a knuckleball and a slow curve and pitched on into his forties.

From 1939 his manager used him almost only on Sundays, and crowds came for it. In 1942, at forty-one, he started twenty games and finished all twenty. He then joined the Marines and lost three seasons; back in 1946 at forty-five, he made five starts and completed all five, then retired to manage the club. The writers elected him in 1955 with 217 votes of 251.
