Tarik Skubal won the American League Cy Young Award unanimously in 2024 after leading the league in wins, earned run average and strikeouts — the pitching Triple Crown, which had not been done in the league since 2011 — and then won it again the following year.
Detroit had drafted him in the ninth round out of Seattle University in 2018, and he had Tommy John surgery in 2022 and lost most of the following season to it. What came back threw harder than what went in.
Born in Hayward, California in 1996, Skubal has struck out 889 batters across 767 innings with a 3.08 career earned run average, and has spent his whole career with the Tigers.
