Stan Hack Marquee

b. December 6, 1909 · Chicago Cubs 1932–1947

He walked 1,092 times, more than any Cub has, and hit .301 with 2,193 hits across sixteen seasons, all in Chicago. He led the National League in hits in 1940 and 1941 and in stolen bases in 1938 and 1939, and was chosen for five All-Star teams.

The Cubs reached the World Series in 1932, 1935, 1938 and 1945 and lost all four, and he played in every one; his double in the twelfth inning won the sixth game of the 1945 Series, the last World Series game that franchise won until 2016.

He was called Smiling Stan and was regarded as the most agreeable man in the league, which is not a thing the newspapers of the period said often. He hit .323 at thirty-five in 1945. Seven writers' ballots gave him no more than eight votes and two committees have looked at him since. He died in 1979, at seventy.
