Shohei Ohtani does two jobs that nobody has combined since Babe Ruth stopped trying. He has been a front-line starting pitcher and one of the best hitters alive in the same seasons, and the sport has repeatedly had to rewrite its rules and its award ballots to account for him.
He came from the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters to the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 and won Rookie of the Year, then Most Valuable Player awards in 2021 and 2023. In 2024, his first season with the Dodgers and one spent only hitting while recovering from elbow surgery, he hit 54 home runs and stole 59 bases — no one had reached 50 of each — and won a fourth MVP the following year.
Born in Oshu, Japan in 1994, he has 280 home runs and 165 stolen bases as a hitter and a 3.00 earned run average with 670 strikeouts as a pitcher, and won a World Series with Los Angeles in 2024.
