Born August 28, 1950
Lafayette, LA, USA
In 1978 he won 25 and lost 3 with a 1.74 earned run average, nine shutouts and 248 strikeouts, and won the Cy Young Award with every first-place vote. On June 17 that year he struck out 18 California batters at Yankee Stadium, and the habit of standing and clapping with two strikes started that night and never stopped.
He pitched all fourteen seasons for New York: 170 wins against 91, a winning percentage of .651, with a 3.29 earned run average, 26 shutouts and five Gold Gloves. He led the league in wins again in 1985 with 22, at thirty-five, and was made captain the following year.
He was from Lafayette, Louisiana, was called Louisiana Lightning, and was small for a power pitcher. Nine writers' ballots got him to 44 votes of 499 in 2000 and no further, and the Expansion Era committee looked at him in 2011. The Yankees retired his number in 2003.
