St. Louis brought him up as an outfielder in 1945, and he led the National League in stolen bases with 26 in that first season. He moved to second base, where he played 1,833 games, and the Cardinals won the World Series in 1946. He was chosen for ten All-Star teams and led the league in doubles with 43 in 1950.
Traded to the Giants in 1956 and to Milwaukee the next June, he led the National League in hits in 1957 with 200 while playing for two clubs. The Braves won the World Series that year and the pennant again in 1958. Then he was found to have tuberculosis, had part of a lung removed, and played five games in 1959.
He came back for 1960 and returned to St. Louis for three more seasons, finishing with 2,449 hits, 1,223 runs and a .289 average across nineteen years. He stayed in a Cardinals uniform for decades afterward, as manager and then as a coach. The veterans committee elected him in 1989.
