Red Faber

Red Faber Marquee Hall of Fame 1964

b. September 6, 1888 · Chicago White Sox 1914–1933

He pitched twenty seasons and never wore another uniform. He finished 254-213 with a 3.15 earned run average, completed 273 of his 483 starts, and struck out 1,471. In every one of those categories he stands second in White Sox history to Ted Lyons, who beat him by six wins and by a single start.

The 1917 White Sox won 100 games and the World Series with him in the rotation. The 1919 team won the pennant too, but he went 11-9 with a 3.83 earned run average, the highest of his first nine seasons. The core of that club was banned from baseball after the 1920 season, and Chicago fell from 96 wins to 62.

The spitball was outlawed after 1920 and he was one of the pitchers allowed to keep throwing it. His best season came next: 25 wins in 1921, for the club that won 62 games and finished seventh. He won 23 the year before and 21 the year after, and he pitched on until he was forty-five. The Veterans Committee elected him in 1964.
