Mickey Stanley Marquee

b. July 20, 1942 · Detroit Tigers 1964–1978

Mayo Smith needed Al Kaline's bat in the 1968 World Series and had nowhere to put him, so he took his Gold Glove center fielder and played him at shortstop. Stanley had appeared there nine times all season. He started all seven games at the position, made two errors, and Detroit beat St. Louis. Managers have not tried it since.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,243 hits, 201 doubles, 117 home runs, 500 runs batted in and a .248 average, all of it for Detroit, with four Gold Gloves in center field between 1968 and 1973. He hit 16 home runs in 1969 and 17 in 1971.

He played 1,516 games in a Detroit uniform and never played for anyone else. The 1984 ballot gave him two votes of 403.
