Mel Ott Marquee Hall of Fame 1951

b. March 2, 1909 · New York Giants 1926–1947

He batted .304 over twenty-two seasons and finished with 2,876 hits, 511 home runs, 1,860 runs batted in and 1,859 runs. He led the National League in home runs six times, tying Joe Medwick for the 1937 title, and led in walks six times as well. He drew 100 or more walks in ten different seasons.

His 511 home runs were the third-highest total in the majors when he stopped, behind Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx, and no National League batter passed them until Willie Mays in 1966. He reached 40 only once, hitting 42 with 151 runs batted in during 1929, at twenty years old.

He debuted on April 27, 1926, fifty-six days after his seventeenth birthday, and never wore another uniform. The Giants won pennants in 1933, 1936 and 1937, and the World Series in the first of them. He spent his last seasons as their player-manager, playing 35 games across 1946 and 1947, entered the Hall of Fame in 1951, and died in 1958 at forty-nine.
