He batted .310 over 8,856 at-bats and walked 1,302 times against 528 strikeouts, an unusual ratio for any hitter and a rare one for a shortstop. His best season was 1936: 204 hits, 111 runs, 128 runs batted in and a .388 average from a position nobody expected to produce them.

Teammates called him Old Aches and Pains for the commentary he kept up about his own health, which he delivered while playing nearly every day. Military service took his 1944 season and all but 18 games of 1945. He came back at 39 and batted over .300 in each of the next four years.

He played 2,422 games for the White Sox, more than any other man has, and the club never won a pennant in his twenty years; third place twice was the best it managed. The writers left him nine votes short in 1964, 142 of the 151 needed, and a run-off election soon after put him in with 189 of 201 ballots.
