Luis Gil won American League Rookie of the Year in 2024 after missing all of the previous season recovering from Tommy John surgery, winning fifteen games with a 3.50 earned run average and striking out 171 batters in 151 innings.
He had reached the Yankees briefly in 2021 and thrown scoreless innings in each of his first three starts, then lost most of two years to the elbow. The command has always been the question — he walked 77 batters in the award season — and the fastball has always been the answer.
Born in Azua in the Dominican Republic in 1998, Gil signed with Minnesota and came to New York in a 2018 trade, and has spent his major league career with the Yankees.
