Lon Warneke Marquee

In 1932, at twenty-three, he went 22-6 and led the National League in wins, in earned run average at 2.37 and in shutouts. He won 22 again in 1934 and 20 in 1935, and the Cubs reached the World Series in 1932 and 1935. Fifteen seasons gave him 192 wins against 121, a 3.18 earned run average, 192 complete games and 30 shutouts.

He threw a no-hitter for St. Louis at Cincinnati in August 1941, at thirty-two. Five All-Star selections, and he pitched in the game in 1933, 1934 and 1936.

He was from Mount Ida, Arkansas, was called the Arkansas Hummingbird, and went back there when he stopped. Then he became a National League umpire, working from 1949 to 1955 and umpiring the 1952 All-Star Game — almost nobody has both played and umpired in that game — and afterward he was elected a county judge. Five writers' ballots gave him no more than thirteen votes.
