Kyle Lewis won American League Rookie of the Year in 2020, hitting 11 home runs across the 58 games the pandemic left of the season and playing every one of them for Seattle. He was twenty-five, and it was the last full run of health he had.
The knee had already been rebuilt once: a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his first professional season, in 2016, cost him most of two years. Further knee surgery in 2021 and a concussion in 2022 reduced what followed to fragments.
Born in Snellville, Georgia in 1995, Lewis hit 26 home runs across 146 games for Seattle and Arizona, and had not appeared in the majors since 2023.
