Ken Hubbs Marquee

Ken Hubbs was the first rookie ever to win a Gold Glove, taking it in 1962 along with National League Rookie of the Year after handling 418 consecutive chances at second base without an error, a record for the position.

He had a fear of flying and learned to fly to overcome it. On February 13, 1964, five days after getting his license, he took off from Provo, Utah in poor weather with a friend aboard and the plane went down on a frozen lake. He was twenty-two.

Born in Riverside, California in 1941, Hubbs played 324 games, all for the Chicago Cubs. The club retired no number for him, but an award in his name has been given to a southern California high school athlete every year since.
